I have recently become interested in the new technology that is 3D printing. I think it is the idea of creating something on demand in your own home that really appeals. While it isn’t at the Star Trek stage of technology it is still quite a remarkable tool. Imagine being able to design something on a computer and being able to just hit print, wait, and then receive your product. As you can imagine it certainly is a big step forward for manufacturing and designers would be able to move from prototype to production more easily.

What is a 3D Printer?

A 3D printer essentially takes a 3D design from a computer, or scanned into a computer, and creates that products from certain materials. The materials at the moment are usually a plastic, or similar, chord that is melted and formed into layers that eventually becomes a real product. These devices are capable of creating anything within to a hairs width or even thinner for really expensive industrial 3D printers. Check out this short video from Youtube:

What Can You Make?

A 3D printer is only limited to your imagination and, of course, your technical expertise. Many people are using them to create individual components that are then joined together for an object with moving parts. Here is one of the more interesting examples, a printed violin!

Cost Considerations

While most of the really sophisitcated printers are quite expensive, you can get some pretty good kits for around the $1000 mark. Many of them you will have to put together yourself, though, so some skills would be necessary. Try searching things like ‘makerbot’ or ’3D printer kit’ and that will put you on the right track. The Fresh Diet’s Healthy Halftime Super Bowl Snacks

Grilled Chicken Skewer with Broccoli & Thai Peanut Sauce

Serves 8

Ingredients:

1.5 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

16 broccoli florets

16 (8-inch) bamboo skewers, soaked for 20 minutes

Cooking spray

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1/4 cup low sodium chicken broth

3 tablespoons low- sodium soy sauce

2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar

1 tablespoon light brown sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons minced ginger

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon sambal or hot sauce

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro

Directions:

Pound chicken breast slightly, and cut into 1-inch strips. Season with salt and pepper, and thread chicken onto the skewers. Top each skewer with a broccoli floret.

Spray nonstick grill pan with cooking spray, and set over medium-high heat. Grill chicken in batches, 2 to 3 minutes per side, until meat is cooked through. Combine remaining ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth. Serve skewers with peanut sauce.

Barbecue Beef Sliders with Cheddar Cheese

Serves 8

Ingredients:

Cooking spray

1 cup sliced red onion

1 pound lean ground beef

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, divided

2 slices sharp cheddar cheese, quartered

8 mini whole wheat pitas, split open

3 tablespoons barbecue sauce

Directions:

Spray a large non-stick skillet with cooking spray, and set over medium heat.

Add onions, ¼ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper, and sauté until onions are soft and begin to brown; set aside.

Spray a nonstick grill pan with cooking spray, and set over medium-high heat.

Combine ground beef and remaining salt and pepper in a large bowl. Divide mixture into 8 equal portions and shape into patties. Grill patties 2- 3 minutes per side.

Lay out bottom halves of pitas and divide sauce evenly among them. Layer 1 patty, a quarter slice of cheese and an 1/8 of the onion mixture on the bottom half of each pita.

Top with pita top halves and serve.

Vegetable Crudités with Blue Cheese Dip

Serves 8

Ingredients:

Baby carrots

Broccoli florets

Celery sticks

1 cup non-fat plain Greek yogurt

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese

1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions:

Arrange vegetables on a serving platter, and set aside.

Combine remaining ingredients in a small bowl and transfer to a serving bowl.

Serve dip with the platter of assorted veggies.
